Yes, cuz we had enough for lunch the next day. Plus the nostalgia, history, vibe.

But if the sammies were $29, no-effin-way.

Yup, got the drive around Citadel Hill. Interesting history in these parts, almost became a state, too much British influence so it was voted down.

Day 91 - Halifax, Nova Scotia.

We're back to small towns with interesting history, lighthouses, churches and big explosions.

First of all, it's cold. Mid-30's. At every new destination I'm out early in the morning taking in the arrival experience. I'm fascinated by the navigation and try to figure out what the harbor pilot's next move is, where he will park us, and how. This morning was no different other than I watched under snow flurries. Our first snow! It dint stick but the deck was slickery

We dock at Pier 20. Below us is a statue of Samuel Cunard; worlds collide; history splinters into many directions. He was a British patriot that fled the US in 1787 and moved to Halifax. He and his brothers were very good businessmen. Sam ended up building a steamship empire. Fast forward, it was his ship, the Carpathia, that picked up Titanic survivors and non-survivors. One-hundred and fifty are buried in Halifax. He would later buy the White Star Line and be king of Atlantic Crossings....
Image

Our excursion takes us to Peggy's Cove and the most photographed lighthouse in Canada. Apparently, only 32 residents live in this tiny fishing village but upwards to 700,000 tourists visit yearly.
Image

It's beautiful but,...

After the Cove we do a drive-by of the 'Titanic' cemetery and Citadel. We axe to be dropped off in town to wander and find a place to warm up, and we did, at Durty Nellys.
Image

We had fish and chips. Soooo good! Best fish I've had in a while.
Image

Image

We walk back through town to the ship...

I find this pic amusing - Samuel Cunard and a MSC cruise ship in the background.

Day 92 - Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Pretty quiet town. We are the first cruise ship by a month, not much is open, plus it's a Sunday.

We are welcomed with fiddle music playing from this giant red fiddle. Pic is from our cabin. We heard a bagpipe player earlier.
Image

We walk along the boardwalk, it's cold and more windy than Halifax. Here's a Maritime Memorial.
Image

Here's an old church (c 1785) and headstones.
Image

I like the Coca-Cola sign.
Image

Here's a cafe with a whale mural, closed.
Image

We found a pharmacy and got smoe essentials and vitamins.

Surprisingly, what was open was the Jost Heritage House (c 1786), the oldest house in Sydney, a couple of blocks from the church above.

When we walked in there was a French lady complaining that she dint have $4 cash to pay the entrance fee, she only had a credit card. Three other French-peoples were standing near by. The establishment would not accept credit card payment. Mrs. CR steps in like champ and throws down a $20 and says "I'll help out the French to pay their way (to see this museum), it's on me". I says, "It wouldn't be the first time we helped out the French". Pin-drop silence followed by both hosts laughing out loud. I look around and the French are staring at me. I says, "What?" :D Immediately afterwards, the male host says, "The French tour begins on this floor and the American's tour starts upstairs".
Image

Once upstairs we begin our self-guided tour. :D
Image

Image

One room was dedicated to the town's doctor. Barkley would've shat is drawers, right.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

This couple played the part. He was annoying though; one of those people who closes their eyes all the while they are speaking to you.
Image

Image

Basement.
Image

Tools.
Image

I liked the little house. It reminded me of smoe of the houses we had in Leadville, CO (c 1888). Uneven creaky floors, crooked door headers and head smacking beams in the basement...

We walk back to the ship, listening to a jig....
Image

I would file Sydney, Nova Scotia under,..."Why, exactly, does anybody live here?" category. :dp

I'm sure it's nice for a couple of months in the Summer. whistle:

That little lighthouse once served as a post office for Nova Scotia. Don't ask me how I know that. It's just more of the vast volumes of useless knowledge that I have stored.

Maybe you could finally find the treasure and new show could take its place.

Da French-peoples are the least of (our) concerns. One of the employees we know is leaving the cruise in Quebec citing a "certain group of people have been too difficult to deal with". She says she will only do smaller, more local cruises.

Day 93 - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

It was an eventful, jam-packed day. Beginning with a beautiful sunrise, an excursion down to Wood Islands Lighthouse & Museum, Rossignol Estate Winery, drive back through Canadian farmland to the ship, a walkabout town, Deck 13 lounge chair viewing of the eclipse, and finally one last show by the Sun at sunset.

Wood Island Lighthouse (c 1876) with keeper's residence.

Image

Fifteen minutes east is Rossignol Estate Winery. Steps off the bus and we're wind tasting. It's 10:00 am. :D It's cold so their white wine went down nicely. The white bearded kat in the hat (John) is the owner and the lady in green (Dagny) is his wife and artist (label designer).
Image

John let us taste a white, red, and fresh pour from the vat....all 14%.
Image

Award wining wine - love the fish bottle. I have one at home from 1982.
Image

Not sure if this was a younger Dagny. whistle:
Image

Wines for sale, bought 3, red/white/dessert.
Image

High Bank Red: Made with Marechal Joffre grapes - never heard of them but they must be hearty to survive here. Reminded me of the vineyards in Colorado, short growing seasons. We had this bottle with our table-mates at dinner. Everyone loved it - think of a cab that is slightly fruity with a hint of effervescence. :D
Image

The Little Sands White is the wine we tasted right off the bus. Like Dagny's label-art of workers in their vineyard.
Image

Raspberry Festival is an after dinner wine that Mrs. CR tasted and liked it so of course I had to get it to too two. Again, Dagny's artwork is  . I think we'll be taking this one home.

Day 93 - Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island continued.

Charlottetown had a Leadville (Colorado) by-the-sea vibe. (IIYR, we lived in Leadville in the mid-90's.)

Two gents of the same name from different regions discuss Canada's Confederation in 1864. The Basilica behind them has 300 angels, let's go see.

I dint count; I'll take the guide at her word.
Image

Image

I've never seen stained glass dedicated to priests.
Image

Image

We walk back to the ship to prepare for the eclipse...
Image

...but we need to walk through a gauntlet of last chance stores. I see a lobster...
Image

...and PEI license plates in chronological order from the 1920's to now. Pretty cool actually. He was selling Canadian coins too.

Back on ship, hundred's have already set up lounge chairs to view the eclipse. I have more fun recording this spectacle than viewing the eclipse.
Image

mg6b2fyb/IMG_7351.jpg[/img]

Image

Image

I set up our own viewing area. I'm getting warm and open my jacket - it's about 50 degrees on deck.
Image

Image

The atmospheric color changes ever so slightly as we near...
Image

Image

...totality (actually 99.5%) the town's lights come on, temperature drops by at least 10 degrees.
Image

Our iPhones were not cutting it. Viewing through our eclipse glasses was great; we never saw the 'donut' but saw slivers at 1-3 o'clock and then again at 7-9 o'clock. This is the best shot we got considering.
Image

An hour later we shove off and these two girls dance for the ship on the tiniest tug I've seen thus far. The girls were hamming it up, had fun, and gave us a little 'BA' as they departed back behind the dock. Hoots and hollers came from the ship.
Image

Image

Image

The Gulf of Saint Lawrence is glassy and makes for a wonderful departure. And as if the Sun hasn't done enough, it entertains us with one last show.

The ship holds a million gallons of fuel. Spread out among 3000 passengers. Not bad if they do not fill up too often.

Ship uses 48,000 gallons of fuel per day X 112 days = 5,376,000 gallons / 3,040 passengers = 1,768 gallons/passenger.
