A few hours after departure, the Captain makes an announcement warning us about high winds, rough seas, and a slippery deck. The spray coming off the bow of the ship reaches us on the 12th deck.

Be safe Comrade!

Day 106 - Isafjordur,...no, Reykjavik(?) :?

We endure a rough night on the high seas. We wake up, it's semi-foggy. I spot the harbor pilot arriving from an icy deck 14. The tug looks like a bobbing toy.
Image

The harbor pilot spins the ship 180 and backs her in.
Image

I check out the runway proximity to the cliff, ship and dock (right) and imagine flying in and out of this fjord.
Image

It's very cold and windy. I warm up in my cabin and get ready for today's excursion. I take a few moments to read up on the airport. Find smoe interesting tidbits, then...
Image

...I notice we're moving. I race to the back and see that we are leaving. What The Fjord!? Confused to say the least. No comment from the Captain.
Image

I go back to my room and lean my head over the railing to find the harbor pilot boarding the tug and depart.
Image

Thirty minutes later the Captain announces that a severe weather line is approaching, a squall line, and deemed this port of call unsafe. We are full speed in exit. Another cruise ship that was to port with us aborts before entering.
Image

We hit gale and near gale force winds. It's the rockiest ride we've encountered yet.
Image

We endure hours of this but finally arrive in the calm waters of Reykjavik.
Image

Image

It's 9:30 pm. Sunset. Clear. Hope to see smoe northern lights.

Even without the Northern Lights the skies must have been gorgeous without the light pollution.

I bet you have noticed it many times, while at sea.

Think about the population who has never been out of a city, never camped in the middle of nowhere, never seeing the stars.

Great pictures and journey.

Not sure if puffin is worth trying, but it's only on the menu in Iceland.

It's actually amazing the diversity of places you've visited so far on your trip. The geography, climate, culture, cuisine. Memories of a lifetime for sure. You used to fly over all that stuff and now you're seeing it from the ground. Cool stuff.

Soaked in salt water, smoked with wood chips and dried sheep dung, then boiled for two hours in a sweet malt beverage before being refrigerated and finally served, bone-in and cold, alongside a packet of butter, smoked puffin tastes briny and a bit fishy and musky-sweet in the manner of mesquite barbecue.
Nothing like dried sheep dung to bring out the flavor eh?
