St. Helena

1 USD = 0.79 Pound

United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies › British Overseas Territories › Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha › Saint Helena

The tortoise on the 2003 5 Pence, Jonathon, is still alive at 192 years old. We saw him at the Governor's House in St. Helena. He's the oldest living land animal to date. The Jonathon 5 Pence was minted for St. Helena from 1998-2006. Jonathon was only 166 when the coin was first minted.
Image

1984 One Pound - edge lettering says "COLONY OF ST HELENA". Beginning 2006 - "ISLAND OF ST HELENA".
Image

One Pound (top to bottom) 2003, 1984, 2017. The 2017 Pound makes no mention of St. Helena, instead it's a 5th portrait, Nation of Crowns British Pound. 2017 Reverse - An English rose, Welsh leek, Scottish thistle and Northern Irish shamrock emerging from one stem within a royal coronet.
Image

Two Pounds - 2002 & 2003. Both say 'St. Helena + Ascension'.
Image

2002 TWO POUNDS (top) is a 500TH ANNIVERSARY (of St. Helena & Ascension) coin!
Image

The top bimetallic Two Pounds has inscribed LOYAL AND FAITHFUL while the lower nickel-brass Two Pounds has 500TH ANNIVERSARY.

This research was a lot of fun. I was mainly interested in getting the Jonathon Giant Tortoise 5 Pence in change (from a local Jamestown coffee shop), I dint realize the other circulated coins I'd find more interesting.

Will you be setting foot on any leper colonies that issue coins?
"Racist" is a toolword. You must know that.
Any objective examination of the effect of "them" has to lead you to the behavior and ideology that is now termed, "racist."

Refute if you can.

Fun Fact: Jonathon was 50 years old (1884) when he was moved to St. Helena. He originally came from Seychelles.

That turtle kid said that live on air when I was directing the newscast here in Portland.
I remember it well... I said to my producer "what did that kid just say?... I like turtles?"

I wish, but I got ripped. I needed smoe Brazilian Bongo Bucks since weez be in Brazil for two weeks for tipping and what-nots. I saw peoplez using the ATMs in the cruise terminal in Rio; I figures I'll get 500 Reis, should be about $100 plus a few bucks for ATM use and international fees. The total came to $136.32!

Access Fee - R$ 49.90,

plus

Exchange rate markup - 14.93%.
Image

In all my years of globetrotting I've never seen that combo - seen one or the other. Usually I pay everything with cc, best rate around. We've done so much stuff on this cruise that requires local cash, so I needed to bite the Bongo Buck Bullet to have smoe cash on hand.

On top of it all, my bankski charged me an addition $2.29 for two fees.
